About Stintino:

Konakli Hotels - getting to and from and around once there

Konakli Hotels - getting to and from and around once there

Stintino is a coastal comune (municipality) in the Province of Sassari in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 200 km northwest of Cagliari and about 35 km northwest of Sassari. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,194 and an area of 58.4 km².

The enchanting old fishing village of Stintino stretches over two inlets with two harbours: the old marina named “minori” (Sardinian for small) and the new named “mannu” (Sardinian for large). During the summer season there are many forms of entertainment for the tourists and the locals, in particular the Latin Sail Regatta that takes place at the end of August.

The museum of the Tonnara (capture of tuna technique) located on the new harbour is worth a visit. The beaches are the main attraction of Stintino, “La Pelosa Beach” is the most famous and with no doubt one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia, facing the island of Asinara with crystalline water and very fine white sand. The other beaches in the area that must be visited are “La Pelosetta”, “Le Saline”, “Ezzi Mannu”, and for the lovers of the rocky coastline Capo Falcone is a must.

The main traditional events are the Rural Festival of Saint Isidoro in May, the Tuna Festival in June, the Latin Sail Regatta on the last week-end of August and the Patron celebrations in honour of the Blessed Mary of Defence in September.

For the lovers of sports there is a large celection of activities, from diving, sailing and windsurfing to quad bikes, trekking and mountain-biking excursions.

To get there from the centre of Porto Torres, turn left just before the port and follow the signposts to Stintino. From national route SS131, go to Stintino and before entering the town turn left and drive west to Stintino

The origins of Stintino date back to 1885 and a settlement of 45 families, prevalently tied down to fishing who came from Asinara Island.  Previously, the territory was populated by the distinct shepherds’ settlements who used to live in natural shelters.
The village became an autonomous municipality the 10th of August, 1988.  The first elections and the appointment of the town council took place in March 1989.

The village is developed inside two inlets where small harbours are situated.  They are side by side, the old port called “Minori” (small) and a new port called “Mannu” (big).
Many events and entertainment are organised for tourists and residents during the summer season.  Among the important annual festivals is a boat race at the end of August called “Regata della vela latina”.  We also recommend visiting the museum Tonnara at the new port.

The most famous beach is called “La Pelosa” but there are others, equally as nice, like “Saline”, “Puzzona” and “Ezzi Mannu”.  “Pelosa” beach is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia.  Its water is so delightful; it’s difficult to find another place like it in Italy.  Its turquoise colour, transparency and the finest white sand render “Pelosa” beach more similar to tropical places rather than Mediterranean ones.  Apart from the lack of tropical fish, a particular type of vegetation makes you remember that you are in Sardinia: the Mediterranean underbrush, present even on the beach.

The most important events handed down from Stintino’s cultural tradition are: rural feast of St. Isidore in May, Tuna Fest (Sagra del Tonno) in June, Latin Sail Boat Race (Regata della Vela Latina) the last week of August, the feast of the Blessed Virgin of Didesa in September and the feast of St. Nicholas at the end of September.
This splendid locality offers numerous occasions for entertainment, both of sporting character (sailing, windsurfing, golfing, tennis, hiking, horse riding, etc.) and of a cultural nature (music concerts, exhibitions, museums, etc.).

Things to Do in Stintino:

As rated by users online -

La Pelosa beach
Capo Caccia and the Nettuno cave
Le Saline beach
Spiaggia della Pelosa
Visit Le Pelosa beach

And our picks –

La Pelosetta – This rocky beach, enclosed to the north by Capo Falcone, has an extraordinary location opposite the little Isolotto della Pelosa, which is reached by a ford surrounded by an absolutely magnificent sea. This popular destination has all facilities (bars and restaurants and even a hotel).

Beaches of the Isola dell’Asinara – Asinar Island’s beaches are truly fabulous, in particular Cala d’Arena, the furthest north on the island and one of the most beautiful thanks to its white sand and 16C tower; Cala Sabina in the northeast, at the foot of the granite headland of Punta Sabina, which boasts sand as fine as talc; and Punta Barbarossa at the easternmost point of the island, which is a great spot for diving.

Parco Nazionale dell’Asinara – This national park created in 1997 encompasses the Isola dell’Asinara and the sea surrounding it. Inland, the Mediterranean scrubland boasts some 30 endemic plant species and more than 80 wild mammal species, not to mention the Sardinian Partridge and Corsican Seagull. As for the coast, on the steep, rocky eastern side the sea is very deep, whereas the eastern side, with its long sandy beaches, is ideal for a dip. This protected ecosystem can be explored in a multitude of ways: further information can be obtained from the park. Phone: 79 503 388. You can also visit their website for the Parco Nazionale dell’Asinara.

Capo Caccia and it’s famous Nettuno cave – Capo Caccia is very popular because of its wonderful panorama, and also because of the Nettuno cave. The cave can either be reached by see (from Alghero) or by climbing 800 steps!! We didn’t visit the cave because we missed the last boat in Alghero (it leaves the port at 1pm), and when we reached Capo Caccia by car, we would not have had the time to visit the cave and to climb back the 800 steps!
I suggest checking the boat timetables at Alghero’s port, and the to organize your day accordingly. Boat trips last for 4 hours (including the visit to the cave) and costs 16€ per person. – Website: http://www.ampcapocaccia.it/

La Pelosa – With its long white sand beach enclosed to the north by the Torre della Pelosa (17C), La Pelosa is a genuinely natural oasis. It is the most famous – and busiest – of Stintino’s beaches and with good reason: views over Isola Piana and Isola dell’Asinara, the aroma of the scrubland and exceptional marine life. The easiest way to get there is by catching the shuttle at Stintino. Parking available (fee applies); bar and restaurant. Together with La Pelosetta, La Pelosa is the best beach in the Stintino area. Water is simply perfect and the beach plunges into the water smoothly. A bath in here can last for hours! From La Pelosa beach, it is possible to reach the “tower island” on foot. If you are driving to La Pelosa by car, remember that parking in here is quite expensive: 2€ every hour!! Unfortunately, there is no alternative..

Church of San Gavino – The people of Pisa built this church in the 11C. The series of blind arcades on the left side are characteristic of this period, and were retained by the Lombard masters who later extended the building. A 15C Catalan Gothic-style doorway leads into the building, interesting for its alternating groups of four columns and pillars. In the crypt are the relics of San Gavino and an attractive Roman sarcophagus with sculpture depicting the muses. Address: Piazzetta S.Gavino I – 07046 Porto Torres

Getting to / from Stintino and around once you’re there:

If you’re travelling by car, follow the main road and the signposts to Stintino.  About 4 kilometres before the town, you’ll see the Stagno di Casaraccio on the left, and you can pull into the lay-by and park there.  You can also turn right onto the sideroad by the saltmarsh and park near to footpath that leads to the tower.

If you’re travelling by bus, as I usually do, there are buses from Sassari’s central bus station, where you can also buy tickets and get a timetable.  All these buses stop at Porto Torres central bus station.  The buses are blue coaches and there are stops along the way, although they can be difficult to find.  There is one just past the stagni near the resort.  You can also catch the bus back to Sassari from here if you want to avoid the walk back to Stintino.  There are only several buses a day, fewer on Sundays.

If you are staying in Stintino, you could easily walk along the Panoramic Route from the town along the coast to the stagni.  It’s about 4 kilometres and there is plenty of macchia and open fields along the way.

Some tips if you are flying into Alghero – such as on Ryanair:

1. Take the airporter bus from the Alghero Airport to Alghero-Via Catalogna

2. Take the ARST bus from Alghero-Via Catalogna at 20:50 to Porto Torres (arrive 21.50).

3. Continue on to Stintino by taxi

Alternatively, it may be worthwhile making arrangements through your hotel for a private transfer directly from the airport.

The driving distance from Porto Torres to Stintino is 32 kilometers, whereas from the Alghero Airport to Stintino is 49 kilometers. Consequently, you really might be MUCH better off making arrangements for a private transfer to Stintino directly from the airport, rather than backtracking to Alghero City by airporter bus, and then taking the ARST bus from Alghero City to Porto Torres, where you would still need to take a taxi to Stintino. You can ask your hotel whether there is a public bus to Stintino at that late hour (I really doubt it). I expect that the hotel will steer you toward a private car service with whom the hotel does business regularly.

Also don’t forget to visit:

Sardinia Transport Authority

You can also use this service: Transfers to / from airport to Stintino

During the summer months there are regular boat trips every day from Stintino to the island of Asinara.  Call the tourist information office for details: 079 520097.  Boats depart 09:30 or 10:00am and return 5:00pm.  On the island they encourage you to take the guided tour, but you can alternatively have a wander.  If you travel left along the sea front from the village where the boat docks you will come to two stagni (lagoons) which have been recently equipped with hides.
